Within 5 to 10 years, the world's demand for oil will overwhelm the production capabilities of the oil producing nations. That's when the world will enter an era of "Peak Oil," rapidly declining supply and skyrocketing prices -- the end of cheap oil. Peak oil is not about when we run out of oil but, rather, when the production of cheap oil starts to decline. And, as we shall see, that is much closer than we think.

Despite rising prices, use of liquid fuels will increase by an average of 1.3 percent per year, or 45 percent overall from 2007 to 2035. If that's true, we'll need 110.6 million barrels per day. Today, the world produces 89 million barrels per day. Where's the difference going to come from?

West Texas Intermediate (WTI) and other crude oil spot prices have risen about $15 per barrel since mid-February partly in response to the disruption of crude oil exports from Libya. Continuing unrest in Libya as well as other North African and Middle Eastern countries has led to the highest crude oil prices since 2008. As a result, EIA has raised its forecast for the average cost of crude oil to refiners to $105 per barrel in 2011.

Oil consumption in Asia is going to increase dramatically in the next few decades and this will outweigh any decrease from Europe and the US. The population of China is still expected to rise. Consumption will slow and decline as oil production decreases and recessions bite, but the exact figures for that are impossible to calculate. U.S. natural gas reserves historically have been concentrated around Texas and the Gulf of Mexico. With the recent onset of shale production the number of states across the U.S with significant resources has increased, with major shale gas-producing states including New York, Pennsylvania, Arkansas and Oklahoma, as well as Texas and Louisiana. Total U.S. natural gas resources are at just over 1,836 Trillion Cubic Feet of Gas.

Total natural gas consumption will grow 1.0 percent in 2012, from 66.6 Bcf/d to 67.2 Bcf/d. Increases in natural gas consumption in the electric power sector and the industrial sector are partially offset by slight declines in residential and commercial consumption. Because natural gas produces less carbon dioxide when it is burned than does either coal or petroleum, governments implementing national or regional policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions may encourage its use to displace other fossil fuels.
